I am lucky enough to go fishing every year at Rainbow King Lodge in Illiamna, Alaska. My brother puts together about 20 people to fill the lodge for a week. We have many repeats and always some new people.
One of the incredible things about this lodge is they have more than 50 locations for fishing. The evening before the head guide and manager, Gus, comes down to the rec room and discusses what places are fishing well and describes whether you will be in a boat or hiking, or… You have choices of fishing for King Salmon, Sockeye, trout, grayling, halibut, etc. Then 3 or 4 get together and pick a place.
The next morning the lodge wakes you up depending where you are going, serves a made to order breakfast, and sends you on your way. That evening we all get together and trade stories.
One of my favorite places is the “Gorge” where the sockeye are running during our trip. Unbelievable!
This will be my 8th year and I get more excited each time. If you ever get the chance of this once in a lifetime experience, go to Rainbow King. You will thanks me.
